Mainline has demonstrated superior business performance for the 9 years in a row. Our proficiency in delivering excellence in projects has been recognised by Deloitte and we have been awarded Platinum Standard again, in the 2021 Best Managed Companies Awards.

25 companies have qualified for the first time in the 2021 Best Managed Companies Awards programme. They join a network of 139 companies across 26 counties in Ireland. This exceptional network of companies contributes a turnover of €8.5 billion and retains 40,000 skilled people.

Mainline CEO, Jamie O’Rourke recognises this award as a testament to how Mainline has demonstrated flexibility, excellence in operational performance, a culture of innovation, and a safe working environment for more than two decades. Jamie accredits this award to the strength of the management team but, more importantly, the persistence, focus, and hard work invested by each staff member across the organisation.

Harry Goddard, CEO, Deloitte Ireland and a member of the judging panel said: “This year’s winning companies had robust strategies in place prior to the pandemic, which enabled them to respond comprehensively to the changing situations they found themselves in. With no sector untouched by the impact of Covid-19, many companies remained committed to ensuring that they did not fall into the trap of doing things like they had always been done, just because that had worked in the past; in fact, many companies took the extraordinary challenge as an opportunity to develop and improve processes.”

The members of this year’s judging panel were Frank Ryan, Chair of the Judging Panel; Harry Goddard, CEO, Deloitte Ireland; Nikki Canavan, Senior Director, Bank of Ireland Corporate Banking; Kate Malone, Director of Human Resources, IMI; Feargal Mooney, Non-Executive Director, Meetingsbooker and Colm O’Reilly, CEO, The Business Post.

Mainline CEO, Jamie O’Rourke in conversation with the Irish Examiner about delivering challenging projects, a culture of continuous improvement, and the ambitious growth plans of Mainline.

Jamie also shares some insights into his formative years, and how they have contributed to the everyday business and success of Mainline.

Mainline has signed a contract worth more than €10 million to provide power and communication infrastructure to a major 137 turbine wind farm project in Northern Sweden.

The work will be carried out at Europe’s largest onshore wind farm in the Markbygden Cluster, installing more than 350 kilometres of MV power and fibre optic cabling

Mainline chief executive Jamie O’Rourke said the company expects to complete the project in less than 18 months.

“We have just completed a smaller wind farm project inside the Arctic circle in Sweden, and this latest contract is our second significant project win in Sweden. Our ability to adapt our proven processes to Swedish requirements has been key to winning these projects in a very competitive commercial environment with local and international players in the market,” he said.

“Our construction, procurement and design teams in Mainline have proven themselves to be able to compete with the best, and lessons learned in Sweden can be applied to major power infrastructural projects in the future back here in Ireland. ”

The Cube office Building on Monaghan Road Cork City is seeing immediate benefits from the recent spell of good weather having earlier this year installed a 22kWp Solar PV rooftop system to generate electricity for consumption within the 100,000 sq. ft. office building.

The landlord, Ardu Capital, working alongside International Solar PV developer Amarenco and Mainline Group has successfully installed the rooftop system which aims to generate all of the electricity required to provide lighting to the communal areas and the underground car park and to run the 3 – 10 person passenger lifts serving the 4 floor building.  Since the beginning of April, the panels have generated power which has resulted in a 4-ton CO2 Emissions reduction.

Ardu Capital acquired the Cube Building in March 2019 and immediately carried out a major upgrading and rebranding programme with a strong emphasis on improving the buildings environmental sustainability features. In addition to installing the PV system the Landlord has also installed a water harvesting system, upgraded the entire glazing profile, added electric car charging points and installed new bicycle racks.

Bobby Sheehan of Ardu Capital commented “Working with Amarenco and Mainline Groups was an enjoyable and educational process and they quickly made me aware of the pros and cons of the various Solar systems available. The PV system was designed and installed to meet the needs of our building. The market for Grade A office space places a strong emphasis on a buildings environmental sustainability rating and we are delighted we are now able to offer occupiers A3 BER rated space thanks to the PV panels and other upgrades carried out”

The Fund which manages a Portfolio of Commercial Properties Nationwide is already in discussions to install Solar PV installations across its entire portfolio.

“We believe the system installed at the Cube office building will become the norm in Ireland as the price of solar panels and all electrical systems reduce as time goes on. The electrical capacity and efficiency of modules are increasing every year and making solar power in Ireland more and more economic. At a time when carbon taxes are only going one way, investments like those at The Cube make real sense” said John Mullins, Executive Chairman of Amarenco

Jamie O’Rourke, Mainline MD commented “Thankfully retro-fitting of Solar Installations like these are becoming more and more cost effective, increasingly making them an important next step on the road to Carbon Neutrality, and credit to Bobby and the team at Ardu Capital for leading by example in this regard.”

“The fast pace of disruption in the current marketplace makes it critical for organisations to maintain holistic, integrated strategies and seek long-term growth opportunities. Through the Best Managed Companies Awards Programme, we are working with applicant companies to help them focus on strategies that will drive sustainable growth for them into the future.
